It seems that we emerge into the light from darkness.
It is by cultivating the light in the dark that it emerges. You can experience light in your own body. Our challenges, those that bring discomfort can be seen as darkness. But striving for compassion or tolerance, a love for God, or whatever response that's better than the average, are ways to bring light from dark. These responses will accumulate and one day you'll notice you feel different inside. Light. Joy. In other words, with enough of these responses (forgiveness, kindness, etc.), and using them, one day you may just find your body embodying the light. And maybe this is "enlightenment". Whatever it is, it feels good.
